‘Enugu assures staff of training ’
The Enugu State government has pledged commitment to investing resources on the training and re-training of its workforce to improve their efficiency.
At a 5-day capacity building training workshop in Enugu at the weekend, the state commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Princess Peace Nnaji, stressed that government’s emphasis on staff development was to bring the best out of them.
According to her: “We have engaged the former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Prof. Peter Ebigbo, who is currently the National President of the African Network for the Prevention and Protection Against child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) to lead other top resource persons to conduct the training for you.”
She, however, explained that the aim of the training was not only to infuse into social workers the highest professional and ethical standards, but also to equip them with the necessary skills and techniques for adoption and fostering in the state.
The director, Child Development, Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mr. Romanus Eze, commended the state government for employing new social workers and for organising the workshop.
He added that such periodic re-training of staff would boost capacity building and improve their general performance.The Anglican Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, expressed satisfaction with the response of the participants.
He stressed that with the massive turnout of workers at the workshop, government would be encouraged to make the training a regular feature.
Chukwuma told the people to give their total support to the reform agenda of the governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Earlier, the training coordinator and National President of ANPPCAN said the training took the format of a retreat to properly drill the participants on the rudiments of government work, ethics, legal frame work, (Child’s Right Law) social work, mediation, as well as fostering and adoption.
Ebigbo said he believed that the training had fully equipped the workers with modern techniques required to improve their professional competence and work attitude and should now be charged and motivated more than ever before.
He called on the Enugu state government to do everything possible to increase and sustain the motivation of social workers in discharging their duties and described the workshop as a huge success,The workshop was organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Chairman of the State Adoption Committee, Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma.
