Glo Earns 95% of New Internet Subscribers in January
Globacom has distinguished itself as the clear leader and preferred network for data services in Nigeria going by the figures for new internet subscribers released by the telecommunications regulator for January this year.
Globacom increased its data subscribers by 354, 178, the new industry figures for new subscriber acquisition by the major operators for January 2016 revealed. Globacom garnered 94.7 percent of 373,835, which is the total number of new data subscribers for the four major operators as posted on the website of the regulators.
MTN recorded a massive loss of data subscribers with 1,705,878 internet users dropping the network in January.
Etisalat shed 94,115 internet customers in January, while Airtel gained 19,657 new subscribers in the month.
The operators’ performance in the last 12 months has become much clearer with the release of the January statistics.
A breakdown of the figures for the last 12 months shows that Globacom garnered 7,251,657 new internet users, representing 53% of the total 13.644million new customers who subscribed to internet services of the four major operators.
Etisalat trailed behind with a total of 5,431,190 new internet customers, while Airtel came third with 961,548 new data customers in the 12 month period.
A total of 1,059,160 data subscribers pulled out of MTN in the last one year, as more data subscribers left the network than those who joined.
The latest figures which is for January captures the trend seen in the last quarter of 2015. A breakdown of the industry figures for that quarter showed that it was only Globacom that recorded an increase in its internet subscriber base in the last quarter of 2015.
