NPA raises procurement panel, charges workers on project implementation

As part of measures to ensure value for its expenditure, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has inaugurated a five-member procurement planning committee.

Inaugurating the committee in Lagos, Managing Director of NPA, Habib Andullahi explained that the step is in accordance with Part 4, section 21 of the Public Procurement Act.

He urged heads of various departments to form synergy and work as a team in the interest of the agency.

Abdullahi explained that the authority is aware of the provisions of the procurement Act, adding that as a law abiding organisation, it will not flout any of its rules and regulations.

He enjoined members of the committee to schedule meetings with various divisions or departments with a view to ensure that projects are in tune with the budgets of the Authority.

In his submission, Secretary of the committee and General Manager, Procurement, A. Jatto, an engineer, explained that the inauguration will enable the committee function in accordance with the procurement process.

According to him, the committee will invite all General Managers to appear before it and defend their budgets, pointing out that the approved budgets of the Authority will be its guide.

The Managing Director is the chairman of the committee, while other members are the General Managers Finance, Legal/Board Matters, Procurement and Corporate and Strategic Planning.

Meanwhile, Abdullahi has assured the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) and Terminal Operators at the nation’s seaports that NPA will continue to support their efforts aimed at enhancing the growth of Nigeria’s economy.

Abdullahi gave the assurance at a meeting held with the House of Representative Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation who visited the Headquarters of the NPA as part of its oversight functions.

The meeting also had in attendance officials of BPE, Ports and Cargo Terminals and the JPS Terminal formerly known as JosepDam.

The meeting which was at the instance of the House of Representative committee on Privatisation was a follow up to an appeal from Ports and Cargo Terminal to NPA on some challenges they are facing as concessionaires.

Spokesman of Ports and Cargo Terminal and General Manager, Legal Services, Tunji Olusinde, used the opportunity to appeal for a reduction on the lease agreement fees and the renewal of their concession tenure.

Responding, Abdullahi noted that the concession was a deliberate effort by Government to improve the way of doing business at the ports.
