How Bayelsa will run model schools, by Jonah
Instead, it will constitute governing committees to “assist” the principals in managing the schools effectively.Deputy Governor of the state, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), who made the disclosure in Yenagoa, said as the state prepares to reintroduce boarding facilities into the public school system between this and next month, it was equally determined to raise the standard of education in the state.
According to him, “We are not leaving the schools to the principals alone; therefore, there will be governing committees for each of these schools to assist in running them effectively.”
Speaking during the monthly transparency briefing in his office, the deputy governor said in readiness for the take-off of the schools, the state government has awarded contracts to the Nigerian Engineering Works, for the construction of students’ beds and desks.
“The state government has got very grandeur plans of revitalising the school system and the plan is to make sure that by the end September or sometime in October, boarding schools are reintroduced.
“The fact that they are starting doesn’t mean that the work will stop. But if we want to complete all before starting the boarding arrangement, I think it would not be easy for us to do so. We have advanced funds to the Nigeria Engineering Works to start producing the beds and desks for the students.
He continued, “Borrowings were made from banks to meet the construction and furnishing of these model schools and government intends to commence them in order to improve the standard of education in the state.”
He added that every local government has one of these schools, “and we also have a sports institute ready in Southern Ijaw Local Council. We are establishing more because of the population and vast nature of the council area.”
