How lack of teachers’ training affects student’s performance’
In a bid to restore the old tradition and purpose of Montessori education, Director of Little Saints Montessori Centre, Ilupeju, Lagos, Bukky Fadayom recently organised a one-day workshop for teachers under the auspices of Montessori System of education. The free, one-day workshop, which took place at 3Bees event centre, attracted over 1000 teachers and schools’ owner across Lagos State.
According to the organiser, the purpose of the workshop was to learn about Montessori theory, the teaching techniques and materials developed by the founder, Maria Montessori. As she put it, “I have decided to give back to the society because I have gone into a lot of so-called Montessori schools and discovered that half of the people do not even know what Montessori is all about. The teachers probably go for one-day training and think they are Montessori-trained professionals. Some schools’ owners with two or three materials and untrained, unexposed individuals also claim to be operating standard Montessori schools. Some teachers can’t afford to attend training throughout the year because of the meager salary they earn. That is why I have decided to take up the responsibility of organising free training once in a year to educate people in the sector what Montessori school entails. The training is not about Montessori but about ideal teacher.
