Political office holders have been advised to demonstrate good leadership by cutting down their spending and other entitlements to mitigate the effect of the recession.

President Muhammadu Buhari was also tasked to deal with current issue by tackling the country’s challenges headlong instead of dwelling in the past by blaming the last administration for the present woes.

Reverend Samson Aderinto Adedokun of New Dawn Baptist Church (NDBC) in Lagos, who spoke yesterday at a special service to mark the independence anniversary, said people in government could not tell Nigerians to bear pains of recession while they refuse to demonstrate the same sacrificial spirit.

He said: “Let them cut down their expenses; let them cut down their entourage from 10 to two and stop using our money to travel unnecessarily.“They are telling Nigerians to bear with the pains while they are enjoying.

“Nigerians need to see examples from our leaders. Let them put an end to security votes, let the National Assembly decide not to receive money for the period when they don’t sit and to make public what they really earn. They should be willing to collect lesser than what they currently earn.”

While appealing to the President to deal decisively with kidnapping, militancy and herdsmen’s menace that have constituted serious security threats to the country, the cleric urged the Niger Delta militants to give peace a chance by ending the bombing of oil facilities. He also challenged all pastors to preach messages that would drive people to embrace integrity and hardwork.
