Wigwe to deliver Caleb university convocation lecture
The Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of Access Bank Group, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, will deliver the 2016 Convocation Lecture of Caleb University.
The event holds tomorrow at the school’s permanent site at Imota, Lagos.
The convocation ceremony will be the first that incumbent vice chancellor, Prof. Ayandiji Daniel Aina, will preside over since assuming office in February 2016.
Other activities that preceded the convocation, which will feature the conferment of first and second degrees on deserving students, included pre-convocation dinner, novelty football match, and valedictory prayer service, among others.
In his address, Aina stressed the need for government to support the private sector in contributing its quota to the education of Nigerian youths, in the overall interest of the country.
According to him, if government can assist private firms to grow, it is unfortunate that it “cannot fund private universities to train people to be engineers, or architects that will design buildings that will not collapse.
“It will also surprise you to know that while we are still debating whether TETFund should support private education or not, government and agencies in Sweden are assisting us in training Nigerians to be good for the Nigerian market.”
He debunked the notion that private universities are established for profit maximization saying: “Having traversed three different universities at leadership level, I am competent to tell you that private universities are not for profit making. We have to disabuse the minds of the Nigerian community on this.
Caleb is a faith-based University that is deeply commited to academic, moral and spiritual excellence. The institution was licensed by the Federal Government on May 17, 2007, to run as a private University in Lagos State.
It commenced activities in January 2008, in Magodo, Lagos State. It thereafter relocated to its permanent site at Imota, Ikorodu, in November 2009.
