Abagana/Ukpo Crisis: Obiano sets up panel of inquiry
Anambra State Governor, Dr. Willie Obiano has inaugurated a ten-member panel of inquiry to look into the communal crisis raging between Abagana, Ukpo and Enugu-Ukwu communities and ensure cordial relationship among the people.
While inaugurating the panel in Awka yesterday, Governor Obiano pledged his administrations’ resolve in pursuing continuous initiatives that will foster peaceful co-existence among communities of the state, regretting that the crisis had caused setbacks among the conflicting communities.
He said what the government envisaged in setting up the panel, is to produce a template that will not only solve the immediate problem but also prevent future occurrences of such crisis in other communities. He urged the group to immediately hit the ground running to ensure that they deliver on their mandate within the given period of four months, assuring them of the support of the state government.
Chairman of panel is Justice Chinyelu Anigbogu while Nwofor Nwankwo is its secretary, he added that terms of reference include determining the immediate and remote causes of the dispute and disturbances in the communities. Other members of the committee include Bishop David Ebelechukwu, the commander 302 Artillery Regiment, Col Isah Abdullahi and the state commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Sule Momodu. The rest are the state director, State Security Service (SSS), Mr. Yusuf Isiaka, the former secretary to the State government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, an aide to the Governor, Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa and Mrs. Josephine Aneni.
He added, “The committee was also to determine the major parties to the disputes and their respective roles in the dispute and the role of law enforcement and security agencies in addressing the dispute as well as to make recommendations to the state government on measures to permanently address the crisis”.
Earlier In his remarks, the secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, said the peace initiative was consistent with the efforts of the Obiano administration since it assumed office to arrest insecurity and create a socially stable environment that will promote meaningful development in the State. The chairman of the committee, Justice Anigbogu in his response commended the governor for giving them the opportunity to serve the state, and promised that they would do a good job while executing their task in compliance with the terms of reference.
