Attack on my palace shocking, despicable, says Ibadan monarch
Governor summons security chiefs over incident
The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has described Monday’s attack on his palace by unknown gunmen as “shocking and despicable.”The monarch, in his first reaction after five assailants invaded his palace during the installation of new Baales and Mogajis in the capital city, said it was only the court that could stop the exercise, as he had asked aggrieved members of Olubadan-in-Council to tow the legal path.
Speaking while addressing the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 11, Agboola Oshodi-Glover, who was in the palace to assure him of adequate protection, Oba Adetunji promised to help the force with useful information to aid proper investigation.
He maintained that the central figure in the Olubadan chieftaincy position was the Olubadan himself, declaring that “the Olubadan-in-Council is just an advisory body and not a legal entity.”
The traditional rulers held that the arm of government saddled with the responsibility of challenging the authority of Olubadan in respect of installation was the judiciary, decrying the needless threat.
“Anything you need concerning your investigation will be done for you,” he assured the police chief. Also yesterday, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State held an emergency meeting with security chiefs following the incident. A similar parley with the traditional rulers of the 11 local councils in Ibadanland holds today in the ancient city.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Olalekan Alli, in a statement in Ibadan, said meetings were meant to forestall further security breach. He noted that the parley was coming on the heels of recent developments in the state.
Alli said the General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Ibadan; Commissioner of Police; Director, Department of State Services; State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and heads of other security agencies in the state were in attendance.
