Buhari Congratulates Obasanjo At 79
President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated elder statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR) as he turns 79 years today. The President affirmed that Obadanjo, who is approaching the octogenarian cycle, has contributed immensely to the institutionalisation of democracy in Nigeria and Africa through his personal sacrifice, extensive local and international networks, and God-given wisdom.
In a congratulatory letter to the former President, Buhari said that Obasanjo’s place in global history is assured for successfully handing over power to a civilian government in 1979 after serving as a military Head of State, and returning to power in 1999 through elections to stabilise the polity, during which he most remarkably negotiated a debt relief for Nigeria.
The President “warmly commended” Obasanjo’s vision and commitment to the growth of Nigeria and Africa, which translated into a historical growth rate of six per cent for the Nigerian economy after a long period of slow growth.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi has urged the Federal Government to be more responsive to the socio-economic well being of the people in order to eradicate violence, insurgency and extremism from the country.
Njodi spoke in Abeokuta yesterday at the Fourth International Colloquium organised by the Centre of Human Security, an arm of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), as part of activities to mark the 79th birthday of the former President.
Njodi, who spoke on the theme, “ Human Security, Violence Extremism and Radicalization: Seeking Sustainable Solutions” also urged the government to carry out structural reforms that would further strengthen the nation’s “weak institutions”.
