‘Capacity Building Is Way Out Of Unemployment’

THE Director of Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), Mr. Peter Papka, has identified capacity building as a viable option of stemming the tide of unemployment among Nigerian graduates.

Papka said this at three-day employment training for interns and firm representatives for 100 interns in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The director, who was represented by a Senior Accountant, Federal Ministry of Finance, Halima Iliya Ville, noted that GIS exposes the unemployed and underemployed graduates to various internship opportunities that provide them the skills and
experiences relevant to the current labour market to enhance their employment opportunities.

Justifying the training, he disclosed that some of the graduate interns who have served out their one-year term have moved on to other employments.

The Business Development Officer of JK Consulting Company Limited, Miss Mfon Otung, enjoined the interns to internalise whatever they learnt at the training and cooperate with their firms for the overall success of the programme.

She urged the firms representatives to use their wealth of experience as employers to allow the interns benefit maximally from the scheme.

Compare the present unemployment albatross with the scenario from the records decades ago. For instance at convocation ceremonies of unibadan those days corporate bodies who besieged the grounds are already dishing out employment letters to graduands as they are coming out of the hall. Its a very old universe
