ENDLESS cult wars in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, have continued to be on the rise as some suspected cult members, said to be about 50, on Wednesday attacked and razed down three houses belonging to a former district head, the late Mr. Nyor Gaadi.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Daniel Ezeani confirmed the incident and said the police were on top of the situation. They were said to be armed with dangerous weapons at the time they stormed the house around 1:00 a.m. and, after shooting sporadically in the air, poured petrol round the affected houses and burnt them down.

The attack, according to residents of the area, was a reprisal one following the killing of a member of a rival cult group by one of the tenants in the house who, according to them, was an assailant.

They had attacked two other places at Terwase Agbadu located along Gboko Road before proceeding to Gaadi Village, also along Gboko road. The Guardian gathered that the deceased cultist was to be buried on Wednesday and members in his honour decided to attack, rival cultists who were suspected to have killed him.

Narrating the incident to newsmen, James Gaadi said they had before the incident got news that cultists were threatening to attack the house. He, however, said the attack came as a surprise, as most of the people living in the affected structures were women and children.

“This is our family house, there are more than 20 rooms in the affected blocks, but most of the people living here are women and children. So, I can’t reconcile why somebody will come and attack us,” he said.

He said though no life was lost in the incident, all their property, including vital documents, were burnt despite efforts by the state Fire Service to put out the fire. He said he had already reported the matter to the police, wh had swung into action and arrested one suspect .
