Delta teachers suspend planned industrial strike

Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called off its proposed industrial action following an agreement reached with the Delta State government.

This was contained in a statement at the end of an extraordinary emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the NUT where the position of the state government on the demands presented by the union was reviewed.

According to the statement by the State Chairman of the NUT, Jonathan Jemirieyigbe, State Secretary, Joe Iyalekhue and the Publicity Secretary, A.I. Okogba, the SWEC expressed satisfaction with the intervention of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa when he pledged to address the issues raised by the union within two weeks.

The agreements reached at the meeting between the government and the union include the payment of June 2016 salaries to all primary school teachers within one week; the payment of outstanding May 2016 salaries to teachers in five local councils in two weeks and the immediate payment of outstanding June 2016 salaries of teachers on level 13 and above in secondary schools across the state.
