ANNOUNCEMENT of a new Vice Chancellor for Bayero University Kano may not be realizable soon due to the Federal Government’s dissolution of the institution’s governing council.

The Presidency had recently directed immediate termination of appointment of all governing councils of Federal Government agencies and parastatals.

The position of the vice chancellor was declared vacant six months ago and nine applicants were successfully screened to undergo the process.

The names of the top three candidates after congregation votes have already been forward to the council for final ratification.

Those on the list are Prof. Muhammad Yahuza Bello ranked first with 834 votes, next is Prof. Muhammad Sani Sule with 116 votes and Prof. Muhammad Dahiru Suleiman who scored 102.

Already the outcome of the congregational parley held Tuesday produced Prof. Muhammad Yahuza Bello as most acceptable by the university community, the final appointment still rests on discretion of the council.

After receiving the three candidates from the selection board, the governing council and the highest decision making body in the university shall appoint one of the three based on required standard as the new VC.

But after the last stage, which validates the chosen candidate, the process was suspended because the statutory body is no longer in place.

The present Vice Chancellor Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed’s five years tenure would terminate on 16th August 2015 and a new VC is expected to emerge and take charge of the university on 17th of same month.

A source in the institution who pleaded anonymity said that the Presidency had ignored the request to wave the directive on dissolution of its council for one week to enable the university conclude the process.

“We are aware the university had since notified the Federal Government of the development and thereby sought possible extension of tenure of the council to enable them carry out the statutory duty. But as I speak the university is yet to receive any correspondent from the government.

“You know they are the one to appoint one out the three names submitted. In fact if not for the development a new VC would have emerged at least two days after our congregation parley. But we just have to wait for the Federal Government’s response. Of cause I’m aware formal request was made but no response yet,” the source stated.

Director, Public Affairs of the university, Mallam Ahmad Shehu told The Guardian that the process of appointing a new VC was fully in process and all the requirements are being followed. He said names of the three candidates that scaled though the congregation parley have been forwarded to the council who would conclude the process.
