The Federal Government is to spend about N1.2bn in carrying out a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 5), for purposes of essential data upgrade for national planning, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, who made this known, yesterday, in Abuja, while briefing journalists, said that the MICS 5 cluster survey is to help in providing broad base data on Nigerian women and children, as well as, other socio-economic indices that government can leverage on to boost the economy.

Director of Real Sector, NBS, Isiaka Olarewaju, who represented the statistician-general at the event, explained that the survey has been designed not only to focus on women and children, but on other key sectors that contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) across board.

He explained that 960 households are to be used as samples in each state, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), even as he hinted that the exercise, which commences immediately, would last for three months.

Representative of UNICEF, Mr. Dennis Jobby, said the international organisation has been partnering with the Federal Government since 1995 to carry out different kinds of surveys in the country. He, however, explained that funding for the project is from UNICEF, USAID, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Federal Ministry of Health, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA).

    Do our leaders really care? Why has it taken us 56 years to collect such data for our national planning. It is my prayer that we will put the data to good use after we collected them.
    Sorry, I forgot to ask that during collection they data will not be subjected to political, or selfish interest etc. Also, that the data will not be misused for selfish interests.
