Four to lose vehicles for driving against traffic

TASK-FORCEFor driving against traffic, operatives of the Lagos State Task Force yesterday arrested four private vehicle drivers around the metropolis, just as it impounded 17 motorcycles for the same offence.

Vehicles arrested for driving against traffic included Toyota Highlander with Registration Number EKY 121 CU, a Toyota 4Runner with Registration Number GGE 892 DM, Toyota Camry with Registration Number XMK 821 DG and Golf 3 with registration number CG 251 APP.

The enforcement operation, which was led by the chairman of the task force, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Superintendent of Police, was at the instance of series of complaints from people around Iyana-Ipaja, Pen-cinema, Airport Road, Ile-Zik and Fagba areas of Lagos.Egbeyemi said residents had complained that at peak hours, some people had formed the habit of driving against traffic, thereby causing accident.

He said in some instances, the accidents had led to the death of many, while some have had parts of their body amputated.Following the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, directed violators to be arrested and charged to court for contravening the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.Quoting Owoseni, the chairman said every section of the traffic law must be obeyed by all road users, including motorcycle and tricycle operators.

He said: “The CP said if those arrested forfeit their vehicles to the government in accordance with the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012, others who intend to commit the same offence would have a re-think.”

According to the Taskforce’s Head, Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the owner of the impounded Toyota 4Runner, one Mr. Kola Abiola, pleaded with the government to convert his one-way traffic offence to just ‘traffic obstructions’ as he was not prepared to forfeit his vehicle to the state.”
