Government commences maize importation
FG Gets FAO Assistance To Tackle Maize Disease
Following the devastating effect of Armyworm disease on maize in the country and other West African Countries, the Federal Government has commenced maize importation to cushion shortfall, just as the United Nation Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has mobilised a team of experts to assist in reducing spread of the disease.
The FAO Country Representative in Nigeria, Suffyan Koroma, at the opening ceremony of a five-day capacity building training workshop for ECOWAS members on control and management of armyworm outbreak in West Africa, said FAO has been invited by the Federal Government to provide technical assistance in the control and management of the disease.
He said the spread of the disease was very alarming, affecting 10 to 15 West African countries, but they were yet to ascertain the full extent of the disease disclosing that they have declared an emergency in the control of the pest.
