Govt to clamp down on genetically modified products

Biosafety law

To prevent illegal importation of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) products into the country, the National Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA is partnering Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the police to prosecute offenders.

The Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Rufus Ebegba, who disclosed the news of the collaboration in Abuja, said the agency would no longer compromise the safety of human health and that of the environment, irrespective of any scientific technology involved.

Ebegba maintained that it has become imperative for government to make the clarification in order to clear the air that the agency was promoting the use of GMOs.

“It is not the role of the Agency to either oppose or promote the use of biotechnology since the Federal Government has already adopted the use of the new technology in the country like several countries of the world as far back as 2001.”
