Group urges Ebonyi Governor to conduct LG election for sustainable development
A non-governmental organisation based in Abakliki Participatory Development Alternative (PDA) yesterday urged the Ebonyi State Government to conduct elections into the offices of the local council chairmen and councilors, adding that this will provide sustainable development mostly in the rural areas.
Speaking during a round table with critical stakeholders drawn from the 13 local government areas of state, the CEO of PDA Mrs. Victoria Eze noted that conducting election in the local councils in the state will not only foster sustainable development but will offer the masses to critically assess the programmes and policies of local governments to ascertain if it was in line with the promises they made during campaign.
She argued that appointment of caretaker committees to manage the affairs of the local councils will not provide the needed opportunity for the masses to evaluate their activities since they did not elect them, stressing that frequent election of selfless leaders in the state would change our fortunes and ensure sustainable development.
According to her, the concept of local government involves a thoughtful commitment to the ideal of democratic participation in the governing process of the country at grassroots, noting that by so doing the local government will have the authorsation to make bye laws to enable it have control over its finance, recruit and discipline its staff and formulate policies that bring about development to the people at the grassroots.
