Ikeja Rotary donates sanitation materials to market
POISED to stem the tide of rising cases of diseases such as Lassa fever and Zika virus in its community, the Rotary Club of Ikeja has donated environmental sanitation and cleaning material worth several thousands of Naira to Obada Ipodo Market, Ikeja, Lagos.
The materials comprise waste bins, rakes, brushes, nose covers and other cleaning materials.
The club’s President, Tosin Kadiri, who led members to the ceremony, said the gesture was borne out of a need assessment carried out in the market, which revealed the absence of refuse disposal bins and a refuse collection centre for refuse disposal in the market.
According to him, the recent outbreak of Lassa disease calls for serious concern to all especially when the World Health Organisation stated that about 2.4 billion people globally live under highly unsanitary conditions. Such poor hygiene behaviours, he said, led to high exposure risks of incidence and spread of infectious diseases.
Receiving the materials on behalf of the Iyaloja of the market, the secretary general of the market, Mr. Bamidele Green, expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club of Ikeja for coming to their aid in tackling sanitation problems in the market.
In his remarks, the representative of the Executive Secretary of Ikeja, Dr. Mathew Ebuloku, appreciated the philanthropic efforts of the club to come the aid of the council in the past 20 years. According to him, the council in furtherance of this awareness recently undertook the fumigation of Computer Village to get rid of rats in the market.
