Lagos council launches ‘Operation no refuse’
According to findings, heaps of refuse have completely taken over major streets of Lagos owing to the sudden stoppage of the operation of LAWMA refuse collectors in most highways. This unwholesome situation prompted Ambode to summon an emergency meeting with the 57 chairmen of local councils in the state.
At the meeting, the governor mandated all the council bosses to spare no effort in ridding their respective areas of refuse and maintain clean environment.
At Isolo, Olaleye also summoned an emergency meeting with all Iyalojas and Babalojas of the markets in the council, where the poor sanitary conditions of the markets were reviewed. The meeting came on the heels of the sealing up of Ire Akari Market by Ministry of the Environment over poor sanitation.
In order to carry out the governor’s directive, he declared a state of emergency over heaps of refuse in and around Isolo, noting that the task is a collective exercise for both council staff and political appointees.
He also charged officers of the waste and sanitation department of the council to double their effort in clearing the heaps of refuse in the various communities.
