Minister stops hidden charges by GSM operators
The Minister of Communication Technology, Adebayo Shittu, has directed telecommunications operators to stop with immediate effect the fraudulent and unauthorised charges being imposed on subscribers or face severe sanctions.
He also directed the operators to consider rolling over subscribers’ unused monthly data.
Also, government is to review the agreement reached with the operators during issuance of licences to ascertain cases of non-compliance.
Speaking at a meeting with the players yesterday in Abuja, the minister noted that his office had been inundated with complaints, petitions and calls bordering on fraudulent and unauthorised charges by Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operators in the country and urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to properly monitor the operators and prevent them from imposing dubious charges for services not rendered.
Shittu noted that many Nigerians had been complaining of deduction for unsolicited massages, callerTunnez and HollaBack tones among others.
He also asked the operators to address the issues of incessant drop calls, dead or silent calls as well as the poor quality of service on their networks.
Shittu insisted that, henceforth, all tariff plans should be properly investigated to forestall hidden charges.
