The Chairman of the Conference of Political Parties in Nigeria (CNPP), Alhaji Balarabe Musa and Labour chieftain, Comrade Issa Aremu have commended the victory secured by All Progressives Congress (APC) Governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki in the Wednesday’s Edo State governorship election.

Musa who spoke on the outcome of the poll which Obaseki won by beating his Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) candidate opponent, Osagie Ize-Iyamu said: “I think it is unrealistic to expect APC not to emerge in Edo State.”

According to the former governor of Kaduna State in the Second Republic, “APC under the leadership of Governor Oshiomhole has done a lot in the state. Looking at it on its face value there was no way PDP could take Edo State under the prevailing situation with mere propaganda. What has PDP done for Edo State? Obviously, PDP has done a lot in other

Musa said that he would not say if the election that brought the APC governor-elect into office was free, fair or transparent considering the role of money politics in Nigeria and the politics of do-or-die syndrome that prevails in the country.

“I really don’t know if the election was free and fair in the state. All I know is that under the circumstances in Nigeria in which money power is the deciding factor in politics and elections there cannot be free, fair and transparent elections leading to a legitimate government. And I am not saying that there was a free, fair and transparent election in Edo State. I am saying that there was an election in which under the circumstances APC defeated the PDP, it was expected.”

Besides, the organised labour leader commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the chairmanship of Professor Mahmoud Yakubu for the successful conduct of the election on Wednesday September 28, 2016, just as he hailed, “Obaseki the winner in an election globally adjudged to be transparent, free and fair.”

Aremu, who is the Secretary General, Textile Workers’ Union and National Executive Council (NEC) Member of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in a statement in Kaduna yesterday also commended all stakeholders in the election namely, the contestants, political parties and security agents for cooperating with INEC to ensure a peaceful election.

He praised President Muhammadu Buhari “for his commitment to democracy and rule of law as evidenced by his seemingly non-interference in the electoral process and above all guaranteed of adequate security”.
