NCC Boss wants FG to revisit monetary policy
The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Dambatta, has called on the federal government to revisit its fiscal and monetary policy as it concerns the telecommunication industry.
He noted that if Nigeria is going to address some of the very negative statistics staring it in the face, there is the need for huge investment in the telecommunication sector.
Speaking when the members of Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) visited him in Abuja, Dambatta noted that the telecom sector attracted about $30 billion foreign investment to the economy between 2003-2014 while the contribution of the sector to the economy in only 2014 was about $10 billion.
Dambatta observed that the telecommunication sector created more than 2.5 million direct and indirect jobs in 10 years, adding that except for the oil and gas, no sector has contributed close to 10 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP).
Earlier, ALTON President, Gbenga Adebayo, solicited for intervention of government in areas like multiple taxation and the arbitrary closure of telecom base stations by government agencies in many states.
He said that ALTON would send a Critical Infrastructure Bill to the National Assembly and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare telecom infrastructure a critical national infrastructure.
