Onaiyekan urges Buhari to be father of all

Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His eminence John Cardinal Olorunfemi Onaiyekan has called on government to rise up to the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria, just as he urged President Muhammadu Buhari to see himself as “father of all.”

He made the call yesterday as Guest Speaker at the Fifth Anniversary of Africa’s First Satellite Catholic Television and Presentation of maiden annual Lecture which took place at the Catholic TV House, Lekki, Lagos.

Onaiyekan noted that it would be wrong to say that everything is fine in Nigeria as long as Boko Haram sect, kidnappers, Fulani herdsmen among others continue to have a field day, jeopardizing the safety of Nigerians.

“According to our constitution, it is the role of government to protect the people. While our culture or tradition forbids going about with knife, arrows, cutlass to defend ourselves, the government that is supposed to stand in the gap between us and those tormenting Nigerians and forcing life out of innocent souls only leave Nigerians to be at the mercy of tormentors while the rich and the powerful people in government always surround themselves with security agents. Some of them go about with sirens to ward off danger.”He particularly lamented the Boko Haram menace that has continued to force victims into becoming Muslims.

He cited cases of abducted girls who were forced to be Muslims and even went to the extent of showing this to the whole world. He remarked that the activities of Boko Haram had shown clearly their intention to make all Nigerians Muslims which is contrary to Nigeria’s Constitution. He admitted that Boko Haram might not be working in the interest of all Muslims, the reason every Muslim should cry out loud.
