Owerri market demolition: Coalition of CSOs demand state of emergency in Imo
Passes No Confidence Vote On Security Chiefs
Citing cases of disrespect of pending cases and in flagrant disobedience to court orders in the recent demolition of the Ekeukwu Owere Market, Douglas Road, Owerri, Imo State, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), yesterday, called on the Federal Government to declare state of emergency in the state.
This was part of resolution reached by the CSOs after a crucial meeting with members of Owerri community and after meticulous evaluation of accusations against Governor Rochas Okorocha, in recent past.
THE CSOs, which met at the Bar Centre, High Court premises, Owerri, also passed a vote of no confidence on the security chiefs in Imo State, who mobilised their personnel and provided cover to demolish the market, despite a restraining court order.
Some notable activists in attendance were Convener of Our Mumu dondo, Charles Oputa, aka, Charly boy; a former Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu; Director of Network for Police Reformation (NIPRON), Okey Nwanguma.
Others are; a top member of Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO), Wisdom Durueke; Owerri branch chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Lawrence Nwakaeti, Dr. Walter Duru, among others.
