PDP wields big stick in Edo, suspends Sheriff’s ‘puppet’
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday moved to prevent the factionalisation of the party in Edo State with the state chapter suspending a failed governorship aspirant, Matthew Iduorikenmwen. This was 24 hours after he declared his interest in the governorship election primaries being planned by the Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction.
A statement issued by the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare said it was wrong for Iduorikenmwen to take such action after participating in the last Monday governorship primary election.
Iduorikenmwen, who lost in the governorship primary, according to Nehikhare would face the disciplinary committee for anti-party activities.A similar action has been recommended to the national leadership of the party for the member representing Egor/Ikpobha-Okha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma.
According to Nehikhare, “He has teamed up with the embattled former national chairman of our party and even gone ahead to purchase a kangaroo nomination form for the same governorship slot which he lost just a few days ago. His behaviour is unacceptable, irresponsible and selfish.
The Guardian recalls that the former interim national chairman of the PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, had declared last Monday’s governorship primaries in Edo State illegal, pledging to conduct a fresh exercise.
In a letter addressed to the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by himself and his group’s national secretary, Professor Wale Oladipo, he urged the electoral body not to give legitimacy to the exercise as, according to him, it was a product of an illegal caretaker committee.
However, a group, Coalition of Women Vanguard (CWV), has Sherriff’s action, saying it is high time he accepted the fact that the party now has new party leadership.
In a statement yesterday in Benin City, the leaders of the group, Mrs. Tessy Uwadiae and Otoide Mary, said the choice of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the party’s candidate was based on popular demand, warning those bent on bring PDP into extinction to turn a new leaf.
They pledged their loyalty to the Ahmed Markafi-led national executive of the party, adding that the team was on a mission to reposition the party. “Why is Ali Modu Sherriff bent on causing trouble where none exists? PDP as a party is very strong and united. Support the party to win elections and don’t use your selfish desire or personal interest to create mountain out of a molehill. Edo State PDP gubernatorial primary was very peace and transparent to the admiration of all and sundry, even the ruling APC. We want to tell Ali Modu Sherriff to go and do other things because the party has rejected him,” they stated.
The Ahmed Makarfi-led national caretaker committee had on Saturday declared as unlawful, null and void the dissolution of the executive committee of its Edo State chapter by Sheriff.
Member of the committee in charge of media and Publicity, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, maintained that Sheriff lacked powers to dissolve the Edo state executives as he claimed.
