Twenty-four hours after it sealed off the Delta State secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, the capital, the spokesperson for the police command, Celestina Kalu, yesterday, said the deployment was at the behest of the party following the leadership crisis rocking the chapter.

Kalu told reporters in Asaba that the over 20 police personnel who were yet to be demobilised as press time, were at the facility to forestall its forceful occupation.

The party has been enmeshed in leadership struggle between Prophet Jones Erue and Nathaniel Omo-Onyeke.

Kalu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the move was to checkmate potential hoodlums who may want to cash in on the situation to cause mayhem.

“As you may be aware, there is a crisis in the APC. Meetings are always going on there and the leaders invited the police to maintain peace,” she stated.

A leader of the party in the state, Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor, confirmed that the police were brought in to secure the secretariat from being invaded by a faction.

“Yesterday (Sunday), based on credible intelligence received of a possible invasion of our secretariat in Asaba by thugs, the Prophet Jones Ode Erue-led exco formally made a complaint to the Commissioner of Police, requesting their protection of the secretariat,” he remarked.
