Pyrates caution youths against being used as political thugs, others

The National Association of Nigerian Seadogs (NAS), Anambra chapter has cautioned youths against making themselves tools of violence in the hands of the political class.

Besides, the body, also known as Pyrates Confraternity, charged them to be more politically responsible and contribute to the nation’s development.

NAS made the call at a citizens’ summit organised by Honduras Deck, with the theme, Electioneering, hate speech, thuggery and youth in building a better Anambra State hat the weekend in Awka.

In a keynote address, Dr. Chike Okoye decried the transformation of youths into social media tigers pandering lies and propagandas instead of setting agenda for the next political dispensation in Anambra.

A lecturer in the English Department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Okoye submitted that youths had failed to assume a more responsible role during electioneering, stating that they would suffer more when bad leaders emerge.

He charged youth organisations to be actively become involved in sensitising on the evils of hate speech and thuggery.

The university don further urged the youths to be involved in the political process, insisting that they must become agents of change.

His words: “Youths must resist all forms of exploitation by individuals and groups for, in this, they take away their voice as well as rights.

“The time is opportune for them to become direct participants in formulating government policies and to do this, youth organisations must create synergies among themselves, looking beyond parochial or selfish interests.

“For this to work well, a change in character and value is required among the youths. They must purge themselves of all qualities inimical to national development.”

The association’s National Secretary, Prof Alex Asigbo of the same University, lamented that negative politicking and social media thuggery were assuming a dangerous dimension.

“These politicians do not insult one another. They don’t post those things on social media, so why the youths? The electorate should become more discerning,” he said.

He stressed the need for youths to be more conscious and avoid politicians preying on their emotions and using them for selfish ends.
