Tragedy claims two lives in Lagos
Two persons were feared dead yesterday in Lagos during the Sallah celebration.
One died after a drinking contest at the Orile Iganmu area of the state while a hit-and-run vehicle at Ikeja crushed another.
It was gathered that a man simply identified as Onyibo had engaged in a drinking spree with some of his friends on Adeyeye Street at Orile and collapsed during the process.
His colleagues who were afraid of being arrested with his body dumped him at a workshop around the area and escaped.
Onyibo was said to have vomited blood before his death hours later.
A source at the Orile Police Station said the victim had no fixed address, as efforts to reach his family members were not successful.
The officer who disclosed this said: “One Asimiu reported that a man popularly known as Onyibo was found dead in his shop at Alafia bus-stop.”
Another source said: “Onyibo and his friends, mostly touts and street urchins were seen drinking heavily during the day. They were competing over who would finish some bottles of some locally brewed spirit popularly called Sepe.
“It was during the contest that Onyibo collapsed. His friends who tried to revive him immediately took him away. When they were unable to bring him back to life, they quickly abandoned him in a workshop and fled for fear of possible arrest by the police.”
The victim of the incident at Ikeja was crushed by a vehicle at Ikeja Along bus stop, with his mangled remains littering the spot.
A witness, Joy Alibuofia said: “We were waiting for vehicle at the bus-stop when I saw the man crossing the road. He miscalculated and a bus hit him. He fell down and other vehicles started climbing on his body. Over 50 vehicles crushed him and his body littered the road.
“There is nothing left to identify him. Every part of his body was mashed on the ground. I felt pity for the man. He should be in his early 30s.”
