UN Calls for immediate release of Boko Haram captives, others

Head of United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA), Mr Peter Ekayu said aid workers around the globe are honoured for risking their lives to save and improve that of others.

Ekayu disclosed this yesterday in a statement to mark the World Humanitarian Day in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to him: “We are here to salute their commitment and recognise the sacrifices they and their families are making every day.”

“Today we are paying special tribute to the women among them. They bring a unique perspective to this work through their understanding of the specific needs and priority of girls and women.”

According to him; “Saifura Hussaini Ahmed Khorsa and Hauwa Mohammed Liman; were midwives with ICRC and were executed after being held in captivity by non-state armed groups for more than six months.”

Meanwhile, the new Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi; has pledged to turn up the heat against Boko Haram insurgents in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States.

Adeniyi disclosed this while taking over as the eighth commander of the theatre at a brief ceremony at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

He said several senior military officers; have fought Boko Haram terrorists in the enclaves of Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.
