Younger politicians should learn from Felix Ibru, says Okowa
Encourage by his contributions to the political landscape, Delta State Governor, IfeanyiOkowa yesterday called on politicians, to emulate the virtues and legacies associated with the late former governor of the state, Olorogun Felix Ibru.Okowa made the call at the Ikeja residence of the deceased, when he visited to condole with the family.
According to him, the late Felix Ibru, who was the first elected governor of Delta State, did not only set a solid foundation for the development and growth of the state, but also “demonstrated love, commitment and humility while he was governor.”
The governor added : “The love and respect of the people for him was demonstrated when he was later elected as a senator and also, the President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU).”Okowa reiterated that while alive, Felix shared certain things in common with him.
According to him:”He was a senator and governor, likewise I. However, I do not think I will be able to become President-General like him,” noting “he was a respected man and we will definitely miss him.”
Going down memory lane, Okowa said the late icon, “was my mentor in politics. When he was the Governor of Delta State, I was a local council chairman. He was not only fond of me, but also used to call and asked after my father. Unfortunately, I will miss those calls now. He was part of the architect of my political life.”
The governor restated that he would miss him, “unlike my two predecessors, James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan, who had the privilege of tapping deeply into his knowledge when they were governors.”
While promising that the state would set up a committee for the burial arrangement, he appealed to the family to partner with the state in order to give him a befitting burial.
Others who accompanied the governor on the visit included members of state executive and Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Monday Igboya. The Ibru family members, led by Goodie Ibru, received them.
In his remarks, his younger brother, Goodie assured the governor and his team that the family would keep them abreast of the funeral arrangements as soon as they decide.“Your condolence visit was a testimony of the respect and regard you have for the family,” he added.
Since his death, prominent Nigerians have condoled with the family. Among them, were the first Military Administrator of Lagos State, Mobolaji Johnson, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State in the 2015 election, O’tega Emerhor, who led the party’s team.
Also present were Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Ladi Williams, Mrs. Nkoyo Rapu, J.K. Randle and Aigboje AIG-Imoukhude, among several others.
