SIR: April 22, 2010 would have been the 72nd birthday of Chief Gani Fawehinmi had it been that the cruel hand of death did not reach him on September 5, 2009. Many are jubilating today that the fiery lawyer and activist is no longer here.
It is a matter of conjecture to think that IBB would have had the boldness to say he wants to rule Nigeria again if the human rights crusader were alive. A time like this would have provided Gani (many believed that the senior advocate died from the sickness he developed from the dungeons into which he was thrown by the former dictator) the opportunity to reel out many reasons why IBB should dare not to aspire to rule Nigeria again.
The only honour and the best birthday present that this late icon would want from Nigerians is to rise in unison and say NO to IBB’s presidential ambition. Any manipulation that will return Babangida to Nigeria’s seat of power is to inflict further pains on Gani Fawehinmi in his grave and to do incalculable damage to his memory.
