APC wins Plateau State council chairmanship election, PDP kicks

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) yesterday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 11 out of the 13 local councils chairmanship election in the state.

But the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has kicked against it, describing the whole exercise as a charade and invitation to anarchy and a rape on democracy.

The PDP youths, protesting the results as announced by PLASIEC, blocked the roads thereby preventing Governor Simon Lalong from travelling to Jos to swear in the elected officials.

Chairman of PLASIEC, Chief Fabian Ari Ntung, said: “APC won in 11 out of 13 councils held in Plateau State. Let me explain that elections in Langtang North and Mangu local councils have been declared inconclusive as a result of box snatching and other irregularities.”

A governorship aspirant, George Daika, said: “I wonder why Lalong who should be the custodian of peace is the one fomenting trouble. This will lead to a serious crisis because we are now trying to see how we can calm the situation here in Mikang because all the roads are blocked. We are pleading with the boys so that we can petrify them not to set the place ablaze.”

Meanwhile, Lalong, in a message signed by state Information and Communication Commissioner, Yakubu Dati, has asked citizens of the state not to do anything that may affect the peace of the state. He said anyone who feels aggrieved over the results of the local council elections as announced by the PLASEIC should toe the democratic path by approaching the election petitions tribunal to ventilate his or her grievances.

The governor, in a message signed by state Information and Communication Commissioner, Yakubu Dati, said the Local Government Election Appeal Tribunal was inaugurated even before the polls took place. He said as a democrat, he could not interfere in the work of PLASEIC being an independent institution. However, Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major Adam Umar, said security operatives in the state had dismantled the hitherto blocked roads to allow free-flow of vehicle and human movements.
