Government aspirant in Edo State, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Solomon Iyobosa Edebiri yesterday, decried the poor welfare of workers in the state, promising to bring them better welfare packages if elected.

The aspirant made the call in Benin City, when hundreds of women and youths paid him a solidarity visit, and also joined in marking his birthday.

Edibiri, who warned against unhealthy rivalry among the aspirants, said only a labour-conscious candidate in the upcoming election, would bring meaningful welfare package for the workers.

He tasked stakeholders on free and fair primaries, urging parents to caution their children and wards, who are often used by politicians to foment trouble and violence before, during and after the election.

Edebiri emphasised the important role of women in nation building and counseled them to keep faith with him and the PDP.He restated that the welfare of women, particularly the widows and the physically challenged among them, would be adequately catered for if he gets his party’s nomination and victory at the polls.

According to him, the only solution to addressing the plight of the workers who he alleged have been enslaved by the ruling government was to vote for someone who would respect labour rules.

Among issues he promised to address are prompt payment of salaries and pension for the state workers. He cautioned that any error in nominating and electing a contrary candidate, would further prolong workers sufferings, warning “ Enough is enough of electing people who get into office and treat people like slaves.”

Edebiri said there was need to upgrade skills and knowledge, as well as develop capacity building to advance workers productivity. He reiterated that the time has come when, “We must develop our agro-potentials to tackle poverty and boost the economy in the face of the dwindling oil price.”
