The Presidency has said that attempts to obstruct government’s war against corruption using subterfuge and bluff will not succeed. It also praised Nigerians for rising against the chaotic rout of protesters assembled at the Unity Fountain demanding the return of President Muhammadu Buhari, dismissing such demand as unlawful.

In a statement yesterday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, told members of the Centre for Civil Society and Justice (CCSJ), a civil society coalition who staged a rally in support of President Buhari at the precincts of the Aso Rock Villa, that the “return or resign” agitation is an illegal assembly stealthily organised to deliver a body-blow to the war against corruption.

He stated: “It might be taken for granted that the beneficiaries of the old order are fighting back. We have been warned that corruption will fight back.” Meanwhile, Goodluck Obi, the convener of the protest, who spoke on behalf of the demonstrators, said: “The group has absolute faith and trust in President Buhari’s administration and not machination of corruption and destabilisation.”
