Edo drives clean-up project with central bus facility
Ahead of the completion of the central park to pave way for its clean-up project in the Benin metropolis, Edo state government has provided a temporary central bus terminal at the Oba Akenzua Cultural Central premises.
The Chief of Staff to the state governor, Mr Taiwo Akerele, made the disclosure during a visit to the King’s Square, popularly known as Ring Road to assess the level of compliance to the Edo Clean-up Project aimed at decongesting the city centre.
He said that the authorities was aware of the challenges faced by pedestrians, “We are appealing to residents, especially those who do business in the King’s Square to exercise patience with the state government. In the next two weeks, a central park will be provided in the city centre,” Akerele said.
The government said the move to create the temporary Central Park was to ease long distance trekking by passengers as commercial drivers have been banned from dropping and picking passengers at the Oba Ovoramen Square popularly known as Ring Road.
Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor Taiwo Akerele disclosed this at a press briefing in Benin City where he said commercial drivers would use the temporary Central Park pending when the completion of the proposed site for Central Park.
Akerele urged residents in the state to make sacrifices for Benin City to be cleaned up as illegal parking and picking of passengers has been prohibited in the Ring Road and environs. “We want to ease the pains and challenges being encountered by passengers. In the next few weeks, the central terminal will be ready. This is temporary.
”For us to keep this city clean, there has to be some sacrifices by everybody. We are cleaning this city on a sustainable basis. The central terminal is to ease trekking long distances to board another vehicle.”
The Managing Director, Edo Traffic Management Agency, Mr. Dennis Omoregie, said the creation of temporary Central Park was not to create pains for motorists. ”No city developed without traffic flow. This is a palliative measures to get passengers close to where they would be taking the next transportation,” he said.
