FUNAI to host South-east remote-sensing centre
The Federal University, Ndufu Alike (FUNAI), in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi state has been picked to host the South-East Centre for Remote Sensing.
The Director General of the Centre for Advanced Space Technology Application Laboratory (ASTAL), Effron Gajere who made this known last week during a visit to the institution to ascertain its readiness for the commencement of the project, said the centre will would cover the south east zone of the country.
“We are saddled with the responsibility of providing remote sensing in Nigeria and we have established such in 2011 at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
He noted that the Uyo centre would serve the south-south zone as the laboratory when completed in FUNAI, will serve the tertiary institutions and relevant government agencies in the South-east zone .
According to him, “It would solve environmental challenges such as urban, disaster and flood management and I enjoin the university management quickly ensure that a temporary office is opened for our staff.”
Gajere therefore, urged the institution’s management to provide a land where the laboratory would be built, to achieve the intended aim.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba in his reaction thanked the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology for choosing the institution out of several others to construct the project.
“We are open to other governmental agencies and private organizations for investment, partnership and collaboration in mutual benefiting and rewarding areas.
He urged the DG of the centre to use his office in ensuring that the laboratory building takes cognizance of Ebonyi’s tropical nature to ensure its durability.
The DG was accompanied on the visit by the Director of Strategic Space Applications in the Nigeria Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Halilu Ahmad.
