The Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed has urged stakeholders to engage relevant bodies aimed at  mainstreaming the global clime change issues into their development agenda both at federal and state levels.

Speaking at a Consultative Workshop on Climate change and Budget, the minister said to do this would involve integrating climate concerns into national, state and local development plans with a view to increasing adaptation to its impacts.

To Mohammed, this is already exacerbating existing problems of poverty, food and water security inadequate infrastructure, and left unchecked threatens to undo national development across all sector and regions in the country.

“We are now focusing on implementing country’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions, INDCs, which along with the ones of 19 countries forms a part of Paris Agreement, signed and ratified at UN General Assembly last month.”

She further observed that inadequate implementation of climate change concern could be attributed to non-focused inclusion of its programmes and projects in national, states and local government budgets.

Her words: it is imperative that a cross-sectoral, integrated and coherent approach be taken towards implementing the NDC to ensure a sustainable path for the actualization of Paris Agreement and put Nigeria in the path of green economic development.

“Reducing carbon emission and enhancing national adaptation capacity through the execution of the NDC and Agreement can create jobs and accelerate socio economic development for the attainment of the sustainable development goals, SDGs,”she added.

The minister explained, they are working assiduously on roadmap for the transition of INDC to NDC backed with sectoral emission reduction and investment plans that would link to national budget planning processes for private sector investment.
