ICEED, EU install solar system in Borno councils

As part of its renewal energy project, International Center for Energy, Environment and Development Foundation (ICEED) in partnership with European Union, has successfully installed a 5KVA solar systems in health institutions in three Local Government Areas of Borno State.

The institutions are: Biu Maternal and Child Health Center, Biu Township Primary Health Center (Biu LGA), General Hospital, Marama (Hawul LGA), General Hospital Kwaya Kusar and Wandali Primary Health Care, Wandali (Kwaya Kusar LGA).

Speaking at the handing over of the project at General Hospital, Marama in Hawul LGA, the Project Advisor, Mr. Okechukwu Ugwu expressed delight that the development partners have made it possible for them to complete the projects in the North East region.

“When we conducted our baseline study, prior to this, part of the project, we observed that the hospitals were having less than six hours of power supply from the national grid, which was not even regular for their activities.”

Ugwu also explained, “sometimes, in the night, pregnant women during labour are attended to using candlelight, especially when there is no power supply from the grid. All that is history in those institutions.”

“We are glad that the solar system will solve all these aspects of the hospitals’ challenges, while some staff and patients would have access to use minor electrical gadgets in the hospital.”

Also speaking, the Secretary of the hospital, Mr. Mustapha Adamu expressed his profound appreciation to the European Union and ICEED for providing the much-needed life- saving solar electricity for the hospital.

Adamu stated that the hospital hitherto provided only skeletal services at night due to epileptic electricity supply from the grid, which most times not available would now enjoy 24-hour power supply.

The secretary, however, said the provision of the solar electricity in three local governments is peculiar because it was carried it out almost exclusively by young men and women in the areas.

“This is part of the life enhancing skills and new vocations being encouraged among youths affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, and it is sign of positive step for the recovery of people around this area.”
