Ade Bakare headlines AFWN next month
Nigeria/British couture designer, Ade Bakare, will lead an array of fashion designers as the headline designer at the 2016 edition of the annual fashion show, Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN).
The celebrated designer whose clientele include English and American aristocrats, international corporations and African elites, will debut his Cruise 2016 Collection at the Africa Fashion Week next month. The show will host five catwalk shows, 50 designers, a fashion gala and awards night as well as panel discussions aimed at positioning Nigeria as a textile and garment production hub.
Bakare, who runs Ade Bakare Couture London, said he is honoured to be exhibiting at AFWN 2016. He also remarked that with the glowing success of Nigerian fashion designers today, in both local and international fashion shows, Nigeria would soon take its place at the forefront of fashion production.
“Nigeria has developed over the past few years with the country’s fashion industry hugely benefitting from the progress made. Nigerian fashion designers are doing great all over the world, impressing at fashion shows both locally and internationally. They have created a market which is growing bigger every day. With the market on the ascent, I expect that sooner or later, Nigeria will become the hub of fashion in Africa and an important hub for the international market”, Bakare said.
Bakare has designed the capsule Cruise Line Collection for summer 2016, influenced by his constant travels between London and Lagos where he maintains his design studios and boutique respectively with the word, ‘cruise’ evoking travel, luxury, style, boats, yachts and summer.
The Cruise Line has been greatly inspired by his clients on both sides of the Atlantic who desire something colourful, modern and ethnic to wear while abroad. To satisfy these demands, Bakare came up with an exquisite range of vibrant jackets and dresses in neoprene textiles and adire in modern geometric and circular designs embellished with his unique signature style of wood and glass intersected with beads that sparkle.
Africa Fashion Week London is the biggest African-inspired fashion event in Europe at the moment. It has been running for five successful years. The project has successfully launched the careers of over 400 young fashion designers of Nigerian origin in the Diaspora. AFWL discovered, nurtured their careers and shot them into the limelight, and are ensuring that they stay there for good.
Having succeeded in London and seeing that most of the show’s talent finds are Nigerians, the organisers brought the project home and in May 2014, as Africa Fashion Week Nigeria. It was an explosive success, long awaited and became the most anticipated fashion runway in Nigeria today.
