‘I teach maths like church sermon,’Bassey
While many students would not want to have anything to do with mathematics for its intricacies and logic, Mrs. Essien Bassey of Pegasus High School, Eket, Akwa Ibom State has devised ways to make her students like the subject.
According to her, she preaches the subject, instead of teaching it. She disclosed that preaching mathematics is like a church sermon, which according to her has helped greatly in sustaining her students’ interest in the subject.
Bassey who accompanied her students to the venue of the on-going 2016 Cowbellpedia Mathematics Television Quiz Show in Lagos explained that the subject requires a lot of emotion on the part of the teacher and the students.
“Mathematics, like religion requires a lot of emotions; and since I discovered this, I have changed my tactics. I, now, preach mathematics; I don’t teach it. Jesus used parables to illustrate some of his difficult teachings to his followers in the Bible. The parables simplify the stories and consequently connect to the emotions of the listeners. The same I do in my class and it is working,” she said.
Maintaining that the numeral subject should be taught in a way that the teacher and the students would both achieve their goals, Bassey who has been teaching mathematics for the past 13 years disclosed that the short term goal is for the students to pick enough interest to pass the subject, while the long term goal is for the teacher to make students great mathematicians.
Her students, Uwakmfom Utuk and Ademola Fatoke of Ota Total Academy, qualified for the semi-final in the Senior Category of the competition. The duo overcame Oluwaseun Emoda (Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State), Bukola Abolarin (Landmark University Secondary School, Omu-Aran, Kwara State) and Nathaniel Damale (Aleka Academy, Ankpa, Kogi State).
In the Junior Category, Oreofe Daniel of The Ambassador College, Ota, Ogun State and Micah Gabriel of Evangel College, Gombe, Gombe State qualified for the semi-finals. The duo defeated Taofikat Tiamiyu of Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State; Peter Atolagbe of Miracle International School, Osogbo, Osun State; Goodness Isang of Nigerian Turkish International School, Abuja and Favour Anefu of Global Kids Academy, Sokoto, Sokoto State.
