THE Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) has launched a Young Women Political Mentorship Project in tertiary institutions in Lagos to introduce the ladies into politics.

Aimed at increasing the interest of students to participate actively in politics in the near future and to also take up elective positions while still in school, the six-month project, which formally kicked-off on Tuesday, has a total of 15 young women selected from the University of Lagos and Lagos State Polytechnic.

According to the founder, Mrs. Hafsat Abiola-Costello, the project was conceived with a view to groom young women into developing interest and actively participating in politics at various levels, beginning from their various tertiary institutions.

“Our goal is to pair selected young women to be mentored by active female politicians, who would help them develop a framework and workable strategy of succeeding in politics. During the period, they will share strategies and help their mentees draw up plans that would help foster their entrance into politics,” she said.

Abiola-Costello added that the programme hopes to ensure that more women take a more pivotal role in governance in the country, as well as occupy elective positions in the nearest future, building on the knowledge, expertise and support base they have gathered within the period.

The mentors include Deaconess Bukola Bada, a gender activist and an active member of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Comrade Busola Olurundipe, a politician and social worker; Olufunke Olasode, a skill empowerment entrepreneur and others.

The project, an aspect of the Excellence in Public Service Series of KIND, started with the screening of The Supreme Price, a full feature documentary on the life and times of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Bashorun Moshood Abiola and the annulment of June 12, 1993 elections.
