Lagos hosts children workshop, teaches them to protect themselves

The Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) recently organized a ‘Safeguarding the Rights of A Child’ workshop for children and teens, teaching them how to avoid falling victims of rape and what to do when they find themselves in danger.

The Workshop for the children was one of the activities lined up in the Domestic and Sexual Violence Month of Activities, September 2016. The theme of the program was, Children are the leaders of today, lets protect their future. The event, which took place at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Ikeja, had over 250 students in attendance, drawn from both public and private schools in Education District 2.

The Maiden Edition of the DSVRT Spelling Bee Competition also took place, as contestants spelt out words related to Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

A trauma counselor of Mirabel Centre, Ms. Joy Onoriose said 90 per cent of rape cases were caused by acquaintances of the victims. In her interaction with students on “Acquaintance Rape, Red Flags and Prevention”, she informed pupils to be careful with how they related with their peers. She also talked about grooming process and the need to take active steps to protect themselves.

Superintendent of Police, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus highlighted certain attributes that they should aspire to have to enable them flourish and succeed in life some of which include, passion, purpose, professionalism and productivity. Whilst fielding questions from the students, she informed them of the Police zero tolerance to issues of Rape, Defilement, Domestic Violence, child Abuse, Maltreatment and Neglect and urged them to report to the relevant authorities if they feel threatened in any way.

Telephone numbers and relevant contact details of responder agencies were given to students to make use of.  Participants were also given handbooks and other important information on Sexual and Gender Based Violence.
