Light up your home with decorative lamps
Decorating with a pair of table lamps is a popular way to create balance in your space. Place a lamp on either end of your sofa, console, or buffet table to add symmetry to your decor. You’ll bring balance to your bedroom when you add a table lamp to the nightstands on either side of your bed.
Because lamps come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colours and textures, they add a decorating kick to just about any room. Even though lamps can pump up the aesthetics in a room, they also have a job to do, provide lighting to help you read, write and work on hobbies. Choose a lamp style to accommodate a room’s activities as well as enhance the existing color scheme and furnishings.
Get Your Style On
Select a lamp style to reinforce a room’s existing decorating theme. For example, choose a princess lamp for a little girl’s fairy tale-inspired room or a decorative football lamp to enhance a boy’s room with a sports theme. Delicate crystal lamps add a feminine touch to a space, while dark wood lamps with angular shapes and solid, sturdy bases convey a masculine feel. Furnish a contemporary-style home with sleek silver lamps; use bronze lamps to complement traditional decor. Create a designer lamp by transforming your favorite piece of pottery, vase or pitcher into a lighting masterpiece. Get a proper electrician to wire your new lamp if you don’t feel comfortable doing the job yourself.
A lampshade can make or break a table lamp’s appearance. Outdated, tattered or soiled lampshades can instantly destroy the aesthetic appeal of a spectacular lamp base. Exchange an old worn lampshade for a new replacement to instantly rejuvenate any lamp. Select a lampshade that’s about three-fourths the height of the base, with the bottom of the shade being wider than the widest part of the base. White or ivory-toned shades deliver increased levels of brightness over dark-colored lampshades. Mix and match bases and shades with contrasting colors to stir up visual excitement. For example, top a lime green base with a vibrant orange shade for an eye-popping decorating treat. Choose drum shades for a modern feel; select A-line shades for traditional appeal.
Since lamps provide essential task lighting, an adjustable lamp allows you to change the angle of the light to fit a particular task. Lamps with a bendable gooseneck base or swivel-arm feature let you alter the direction of the light to suit your preference. Select an ergonomic desk lamp with the flexibility and versatility to change the path of the light. For example, top your desk with a lamp that has multiple pivot points to direct the rays toward a specific work item, such as a special project, writing papers, open books or a calculator. Position your desk lamp on the opposite side of the desk from your writing hand to minimize annoying shadows. You should also angle the light rays downward away from your eyes.
Location Wins Every Time
Position your lamps in locations where they are needed, such as bedside, sofa or end tables. Avoid placing lamps with large, solid bases in locations that block the view or obstruct conversation. For example, substitute a lamp with a thin or transparent base for a lamp with a wide, solid base on an accent table between two armchairs to create a more open feel. Light up a dark corner with a floor lamp, and illuminate a sideboard with stylish buffet lamps. Add symmetrical balance to a living room by flanking a sofa with a pair of matching lamps. Space your lamps about every 10 feet if they are the only light source in a room.
