With XYZA, Okoye battles domestic violence
Nollywood actor and now United States-based Ejike Okoye is not new on the movie turf as he cut his teeth in the blockbuster, Rattle Snake, which debut in 2000. The actor recently featured in the movie XYZA, a film is based on domestic violence, which premiered in the cinemas on February 27.
Speaking about the movie, Okoye said, “No one can understand the complex world of the abused more than the victim itself. The movie is inspired by real-life events within the African immigrant community.”
“The movie is an emotional roller coaster of love, hate, fear and hope. I am working on a couple of movies now like The Web and Double Wahala. They are both excellent movies as well. Double Wahala is a comedy movie,” he added.
On his role in XYZA, Okoye said, “I played Mr. Desmond Bello, a Nigerian expatriate living in the U.S and one of the lead characters in the movie. He is a man you will love and probably hate. Desmond is married to Xyza, a hard working woman who wanted to live a decent life and was searching for a good husband to build a family until she met a friend by name Francis and her whole life changed.”
He noted that the true character of Desmond comes alive after his wife (Xyza) graduated from medical school and started working. “Desmond becomes obsessed with the money his wife is making; he becomes abusive, authoritative, brutal, disrespectful, brutish, insulting, violent and cruel to his wife,” he stated.
“After an unfortunate chance meeting, Xyza is stucked into a dark world of mental, emotional and physical abuse at the hands of the man who promised her a life filled with happiness. Xyza desperately seeks solutions to escape her entrapment. Will she succeed?”
