Confederations Cup should be reference point for Cameroon showdown, says Obuh

John Obuh

Former Flying Eagles Coach, John Obuh has urged Super Eagles players and their officials to learn from the performance of the top teams at the just concluded FIFA Confederations Cup, which ended yesterday in Russia, saying such lessons should help them in their World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon.

He noted that tactical discipline, players commitment and the zeal to win at all cost displayed by Germany, Chile, Portugal and Mexico should be imbibed by the Eagles as they prepare to battle the Indomitable Lions.

Obuh noted that despite the fact Cameroun did not did perform well in the championship, their ability to play against the tourney’s finalist, Germany and Chile in the Confederation Cup’s group matches has given more experience to their players, who had not been able to play grade a games after their Nations Cup victory.

The erstwhile U-17 coach stated that for the Eagles to succeed in their quest to book a place in the World Cup and AFCON, they have to raise the standard of their game, adding that the Indomitable Lions have the advantage of having being playing together for a long time.

He admitted that the Super Eagles have quality players that can qualify the nation for the Africa and World Championships, adding that selecting the right players should be the main task for the coach.

Obuh pleaded with football followers not to write off the Eagles as the loss to South Africa has opened the eyes of the players and coaches to the lapses in the team.

“Tactical discipline, quality marksman-ship were displayed by the top teams in the championship. Cameroun have advantage over the Eagles now ahead of the qualifier because they have played against big players and teams in the World.

“The Super Eagles have to be more focused and resilient to over run Cameroun that have enough pace and strength. Using the standard of players’ performance in the Confederation Cup, which is determination to succeed without complacency will be good for the Eagles in all the qualifiers. We have quality players that can get the best result against Cameroun,” he said.
