Drogba doubtful for MLS opener
Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba is a doubt for Montreal Impact’s Major League Soccer (MLS) opener away to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday night.
The 37-year-old former Elephants captain scored 11 goals in as many MLS games in the 2015 season, his first in North America after spells in France, England, China and Turkey.
He helped his Canadian side reach the semifinals of the Eastern Conference, where they were beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Columbus Crew.
According to Montreal radio station 98.5 Sports, Drogba is suffering from an inflamed knee following the Impact’s training camp in Florida. The injury is not a serious one, but coach Mauro Biello is unlikely to take a risk with his star player.
In addition, the Impact will be playing four of their opening five matches of the 2016 season on artificial surfaces, meaning Drogba was always likely to have a slow start to the campaign.
