Federal Government endorses 2016 Legends Wrestling for Unity Festival
The Federal Government has officially endorsed the 2016 Wrestling for Unity Festival being put together by a group known as The Ultimate Wrestling and Charity Organization (TUWCO) in honour of Nigeria’s heroes past.
Speaking when the organization, which is headed by Ambassador Osita Offor, a former world wrestling champion, popularly known as De Ultimate Commander, paid him a visit in his office yesterday in Abuja, the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, assured the delegation that the Federal Government would contribute its quota to make the event a success.
“I want to assure you that wherever peace is involved as an ingredient, we will be there. Without peace, it would have not been possible for us to gather here,” he said.
The minister noted that sports have the capacity to turn around the fortunes of the country when properly harnessed.
“There are many opportunity in sports; it has the capacity to provide employment, foreign exchange earner, promotion of national unity, integration and entertainment. Everything revolves around sports. If we harness the resources in sports, majority of our challenges would be reduced,” he added.
Dalung commended De Ultimate Commander for his patriotism to Nigeria over the years, saying, “he has thrown a very big challenge to so many Nigerians, who are outside Nigeria, to so many Nigerians who have been talking bad about Nigeria and to those who have continued to maintain a negative narrative about Nigeria.”
Ambassador Offor said the event will be used as platform to showcase an array of world renowned wrestlers who will be fighting for peace and unity of the nation.
He disclosed that about 20 wrestlers from around the world would be participating at the event, adding that the two-day programme will not only showcase wrestling bouts but also feature the best of Nigerian musicians, comedians and presentation of Unity awards to the country’s living and past heroes.
The event will take place in December and would be preceded by the lighting of the wrestling for unity torch that would tour places including Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, he said.
