GCU Relays offer scholarship to best athletes
This latest input to the GCU Relays was disclosed in Lagos during the week by President General, Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA Worldwide), Arc. Ovo Charles Majoroh.
According to him, the overall best performing athletes in both the boys and girls category will earn a full-tuition sum of N50,000 per year over a period of three years.
“We want to motivate the athletes with the sum of N150,000 scholarship spread over three years (N50,000) each for the male and female all-round best athletes,” Mojoroh stated.
Preparations for the 2019 edition of the GCU Relays are now in top gear as the organizers have fixed November 16 as of the date for the Meet, which is expected to attract participation from about 30 secondary schools from across the country.
“Last year, we recorded an encouraging number of schools in the Relays. Some of the iconic colleges like Igbobi College Lagos, Government Secondary School Afikpo, Edo College Benin among others attended the Meet, which was a huge success. This year, we expect at least 30 schools to take part in the event,” he stated.
Majoroh explained that the Meet would feature 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x4oom Relays. He noted that the Old Boys Association organizes the GCU Relays with support from Shell, NNPC, NDDC and Pillar Oil.
“There could not have been a better time than now when we are still hurt by the dismal outing of Team Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, where our team returned with only one bronze medal,” Majoroh said.
He added that in the next four to five years, products from the programme would represent and win medals for Nigeria in international Meets.
